There are other charms to be found in the north of Spain. On the Cantabrian coast you will find Bilbao, where the traditional old town meets the avant-garde of the most modern architecture.
Bilbao, the most populated Basque city, is the driving force of social and economic development and it is the main factor in the modernisation of the Gulf of Biscay. The Guggenheim Museum; the Euskalduna Concert Hall and Convention Centre; the underground, built by Norman Foster; the airport, built by Calatrava…. are only some of the examples of the vitality that you can breath in Bilbao.
Guggenheim, Puente de Portugalete y Teatro Arriaga
Bilbao's 700 years of history are present in buildings and constructions that will pleasantly surprise visitors. The historic quarter is listed as a Conservation Area and forms the best point of reference for understanding the city's history. We will find at it the Santiago Cathedral, the Arqueological Museum and the Teatro Arriaga.
The Bilbao Guggenheim Museum has become the cultural and tourist driving force of the Basque Country and The Fine Arts Museum is also among the best of its kind in Spain, with a great gallery that houses three collections: art through the centuries (El Greco, Zurbarán, Goya, and Van Dyck), contemporary art (Gauguin, Bacon, and Tàpies), and Basque art (Regoyos, Zuloaga, and Iturrino).
In the surroundings, there is the Vizcaya Bridge (Puente Colgante de Portugalete) linking the towns of Portugalete and Getxo, which is still working after more than a hundred years. It was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco as the world’s oldest transporter bridge, built in 1893.
Not to be missed are the delicious "pinchos" (tapas served on bread) that you can try in any of its bars in the Casco Viejo or Abando quarter.
In addition to the cultural offer, the city has a very important natural heritage. The city is surrounded by fertile landscapes, with forests, mountains, beaches, and steep coasts. It is worth mentioning the Gorbeia and Urkiola ranges of hills, both of which have been declared nature reserves, and where you can enjoy a gorgeous landscape, their rich flora and fauna, as well as many activities such as horse riding tours, hiking, cycle touring, fishing… And surf in the magical and legendary wave of Mundaka, reknowned, not only in Europe but worldly thanks to “la izquierda” area, one of the best for surfers. Along the Biscay coast, you will find small fishing ports, such as Bermeo or Ondarroa in addition to tourist towns blessed with fine sand beaches, such as Plentzia, Górliz, Bakio, etc. All of them part of the Green Spain.
